Everybody's
talking about "Swingin' Sounds from Downtown," when the AMC Walkway turns
into an open-air dance hall with thousands of people swinging and jiving
under the stars every Thursday night. There's a special twist in August,
when audiences can rumba, mambo and cha-cha to bands with a Latin flavor.
Events kick-off at 6:00 P.M., with free swing and salsa classes led by
expert instructors Francisco and Stacey of The Dance Family Studio. Bands
strike up at 7:00 P.M. Concerts run for approximately 2 ½ hours.
Schedule:
AUGUST 10 - Orquestra Charangoa
The “charanga” sound of Orquesta Charangoa blends infectious
rhythms with flute, vocals and strings to create an upbeat and inspiring
sound beloved of salsa dancers. This 8-piece band is recognized as Los
Angeles’ most elegant and exciting Cuban dance orchestra.

AUGUST - 17 Leslie Paula
Leslie Paula's soaring vocal range and sultry, sexy sounds have
landed her center stage on more than one occasion. For two years running,
she's performed at the Emmy Night Governors Ball as well as at the Oscar
Night Governors Ball in 2001. Leslie Paula and her Latin soul band perform
regularly in the West Coast club and festival circuit.

AUGUST 24 - Louie Cruz Beltran & His Latin
Orchestra
Louie Cruz Beltran and his orchestra perform an extensive
repertoire of music from Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms. They blend R&B,
salsa, reggae, Latin, rock and jazz into a stimulating show which draws
the audience to their feet and compels them to remain there throughout the
evening.

AUGUST 31 - Son Mayor
Son Mayor is known for its contagious sound, and has been
dubbed by LA Weekly as the best salsa band in LA. Led by the Ortiz
brothers, the 12-piece band is a horn, percussion and bass powerhouse.
They have brought their amazing energy to the Playboy Jazz Festival,
Hollywood Bowl, and, by personal request, to the 2001 wedding of
actress/singer Jennifer Lopez.

GIVE A BIG DOWNTOWN WELCOME TO
ROMANCING THE BEAN
Romancing
the Bean is opening its second Burbank location at 150 South San Fernando
Road in Downtown Burbank in mid-August. You're probably already familiar
with this homegrown Burbank coffeehouse, which opened its first location
in the Media District in 1993, then moved to Magnolia Park three years
ago. "I chose to expand to Downtown Burbank because I love the new urban
living that is happening here. I have made the new location cozy like an
extension of the new lofts in the Downtown area," states Kerry Krull,
owner and founder of Romancing the Bean. "I'm planning live music on
weekends, great community atmosphere everyday - and wonderful coffee all
the time."
In addition to coffee, Krull is introducing salads, gourmet sandwiches,
paninis, and an extensive dessert and pastry menu. For further information
on this great new addition to Downtown Burbank, please call 818.524.BEAN. |

DO YOU WI-FI?
Surfing the web in Downtown Burbank is as easy as 1-2-3. And best of
all, it is free. All a customer needs is a laptop with a wireless card
(most models built after 2002 have them already installed. Even
without a built-in receiver, it is easy to buy and install a "wireless
card" from any major computer store.) Downtown's Wi-Fi coverage area
extends from the Holiday Inn to Burbank Boulevard, and from the
Metrolink Station to Glenoaks. The hotspot offers many opportunities
for users to access the Internet on laptops, notebooks, smart phones,
personal digital assistants (PDAs) or hand-held game devices.
If you haven't tried using this latest step in computer technology,
please check out the complete "how-to" on the Downtown Burbank
website, www.downtown-burbank.org.
